Places

Some places I've lived in, studied in, or passed through, and what I remember them for. Each one taught me something, usually about people more than the place itself. If you're from any of them, or think there's somewhere I should see next, I'd love to hear from you.

Africa

  • Nigeria — Home. Where I first learnt how to build and ship things.

Europe

  • Finland — First year of my master's, a summer of RL, and now work. Also where I learnt what sisu means, presenting at –26.
  • Spain — Second year of my master's, computer vision and robotics. Santiago Bernabéu, Gaudí, and the layers of Islamic history across Andalucía.
  • United Kingdom — The OxML summer school, the Robin Hood statue in Nottingham, and learning to never leave without an umbrella.
  • Italy — The Mediterranean Machine Learning Summer School, learning about transformers from one of the co-inventors of the Vision Transformer and the mountains of L'Aquila.
  • Sweden — The history of technology at Tekniska museet in Stockholm, and Volvo in the industrial city of Eskilstuna.
  • Poland — The Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk. The history I learnt there will always stay with me.
  • Germany — The CMMRS summer school and the friends I made along the way. Then BMW and the Deutsches Museum in Munich, which made me feel like a kid all over again.
  • France — The Mona Lisa. Yes, it is that good. And, Champs-Élysées.
  • Austria — The Sachertorte we walked kilometres for. Wien has a special place in my heart. Vienna just feels nice.
  • Czech Republic — Prague Castle is amazing, and the astronomical clock is a wonder to watch.
  • Estonia — The ports of Tallinn, and my first trip by sea.
  • Hungary — Budapest's Parliament, proof that a government building doesn't have to be boring.
  • Netherlands — The canals of Amsterdam, which felt like stepping back into the 17th century.
  • Belgium — Learning how the EU was formed at the Brussels Museum, while staying on the street just behind the Berlaymont Building.
  • Luxembourg — The only country I've spent just two hours in. Don't ask how.
